Osteoarthritis is a prevalent and progressive joint condition characterized by the gradual degradation of cartilage—the smooth, cushion-like tissue that covers the ends of bones within a joint. This deterioration can result from a combination of factors, including aging, wear and tear, and genetic predisposition. As cartilage breaks down, it can lead to friction between bones, causing joint pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility.
Osteoarthritis typically affects weight-bearing joints, such as the knees, hips, and the spine’s facet joints. While it is more common in older individuals, it can also develop as a result of joint injuries or other underlying health conditions.
